    Flats Fishing Belize

For more than two decades, Turneffe Flats has been known as one of the world's premier flats fishing destinations combining a remarkable fishery with excellent English-speaking guides, top-notch equipment and superior service. The ability to sight-fish for BONEFISH, PERMIT and TARPON on any given day makes Turneffe one of the few places where a Grand Slam is always a possibility.

    Bonefishing Belize

    kuyshafdysiyfoiusdofyyfsdyyryet

For decades, bonefishing has been the core of Turneffe Atoll's varied flats fishing. Our ocean side flats offer miles of firm, wadeable flats filled with large schools of bonefish.

During a day of bonefishing at Turneffe it is not unusual to see hundreds of bonefish with schools often in excess of 100 fish. Our bonefish average 3 - 4 pounds but it isn't at all unusual to hook 6 to 8 pound fish and 10+ pound bonefish are certainly not unheard of.

Golden Bonefish are occasionally seen on the flats at Turneffe and, as far as we know, they aren't seen anywhere else. These fish have a distinctive golden color making them clearly stand out from the rest of the school. Generally, they are in the middle of a school and difficult to hook; but, on occasion, one is landed and released.

Particularly in the lagoons, bonfishing is often done from the bow of a skiff. Bonefish in the lagoon take on a beautiful brownish coloration allowing them to blend better with the bottom. This fishing is primarily to cruising singles or small schools. Accuracy is required for this challenging and fun fishing.

For bonefish, we recommend a 7 or 8 weight rod with a reel capable of holding around 200 yards of backing. Floating lines are imperative, particularly when wading, and our flies tend to be smaller than those used elsewhere - generally 6's and 8's but also some 10's. A couple of well-known flies have been developed at Turneffe Flats including the Pops Bonefish Bitters created by Craig Mathews with the help of our guide Winston "Pops" Cabral.

    Permit Fishing Belize

    utywquiykiashyadfhsrytsiudfiy

Belize is known by fly anglers around the globe as the permit capital of the world, and at Turneffe Flats we are fortunate to enjoy some of the best permit water in Belize. Permit are the primary target of many anglers visting Turneffe Flats and we are pleased to say that many have landed their first permit with us.

Turneffe offers approximately 250 square miles of fishing area and most of our permit fishing is done on the shallow bars and flats inside Turneffe's Central Lagoon or on the ocean-side backreef flats. These fantastic permit flats are generally 1 to 3 feet deep and the bottom is a combination of turtle grass, hard coral and sand depending upon the location. Our flats offer great opportunities to sight fish to tailing permit actively feeding on the flats. While poled the flats, your guide will be looking for tell-tale fins, the classic V-shaped wake, or cruising fish in the water.

Serious permit anglers realize that the game is as much about hunting as it is fishing. Permit fishing requires a substantial committment of time and energy but the long periods looking for permit are rapidly forgotten when you spot a feeding permit with his tail in the air.

Permit at Turneffe probably average around 15 to 18 pounds but there are some huge permit around. We have landed a couple of permit in the 40 - 45 pound range and are pretty certain that there are a couple of 50 pounders around. We primariliy fish from the bow of our Dolphin Superskiffs which pole quietly and are also perfect for moving around the atoll.

In addition to traditional hunting for permit, Turneffe offers the oppotunity to fish to large schools of tailing fish. These permit are usually found cruising a lengthy mangrove shore and schools can contain 100 or more fish. When a school is located our guide will pole into position above the school often resulting in multiple opportunities to cast to tailing permit. This is a great option for those anglers not fully devoted to hunting for permit.

We recommend a 9 or 10 weight rod with at least 200 yards of backing. Larger crab patters seem to work best with Enrico Puglisi's "EP Merkin" in either tan or olive being our number one pattern. Other good patterns include the "Bauer Crab" developed by Will Bauer and the "Turneffe Crab" originated by Craig Mathews. A weight forward floating line is desirable as more often than not it is necessary to be able to pick up and go again. We prefer stiff leaders able to turn over a large, wind-resistent fly and hand-tied knotted leaders are generally preferable. We have developed our own leader formula that addresses our conditions well. 15 to 18 pound tippet is advisable and we believe that flourocarbon does offer an advantage.

    DIVING

    ytrfqwyteguidfudugsfgdjgfjhr
Belize's Atolls consistently ranks among the World's top dive locations and Turneffe Flats is ideally located to take advantage of Belize's very best Scuba diving. Our extaordinary dive program offers 18 dives each week including a day of diving at Lighthouse Reef and the Blue Hole, weather permitting.

We easily access more than 60 dive sites around the Turneffe Atoll, and are within an hour's boat ride to the Blue Hole. At Turneffe Flats, we offer true valet dive service. After putting your dive gear on your porch the first morning, it is washed and set up on the dive boat the remainder of the week. All you need to do is walk to the dive boat after a delicious breakfast and head for one of our exceptional dive sites.

We emphasize personalized service for a limited number of divers, generally no more that twelve on our Pro 48. Our superb dive team is led by Belize's Tour Guide of the Year, Alex Edwards, and they make every effort to ensure that your stay at our tropical paradise is as comfortable and carefree as possible.

    jhqgwhiehdshfkdfstydastwerq

We recognize that a dive vacation is more than just diving, and we do our best to make your entire experience is something special. While diving throughout the Turneffe Atoll, you will see a variety of hard and soft corals as well as all of the Caribbean tropicals, eagle rays, sharks, turtles, dolphins, moray eels, and occasionally a whale shark in addition to large schools of permit, horse eye jacks and dog snapper.

    A Typical Days Diving
Following a great breakfast, a typical dive day begins at 8:00 and includes three boat dives. Depending on our dive location, we either return to the resort for lunch or pack a lunch. Travel to our dive sites takes from ten minutes to an hour with our longest trip to the Blue Hole. On Blue Hole day we leave between 7:00 and 7:30 AM which oftern makes us the first boat at the site. Our weekly night dive is usually on Wednesday evening; and we generally dive the Elbow, at the Southern tip of Turneffe, later in the week. On Fridays, we do two or three dives depending on divers flights the following day.

    Our Dive Locations
As the largest and most biologically diverse coral atoll in the Caribbean, Turneffe offers spectacular underwater terrain including spur and groove formations, sandy ledges and sheer walls providing spectacular dive sites suited for every level of diver. Our location, near the middle of the seaward side of the Atoll, allows us good access to all of Turneffe's dive sites allowing our dive guests the opportunity to dive the best possible sites each day regardless of weather.

    jgqwudghjdskghfgsfyr

The Eastern side of Turneffe is protected by 35 miles of reef. It shelves gradually to about 60 feet where spur and groove formations meet the wall. Nutrients from the mangroves are dispersed to the reef by the tides causing large concentrations of feeding fish to congregate.

On the West side of the Atoll, large mangroves stands provide shelter from the trade winds and heavy seas. A gently sloping bottom lies at 30-50 feet with large coral formations covering the white sand bottom. The reduced wave action allows sponges and soft corals to grow magnificently and sea feathers of 5 feet are common.

The North side of Turneffe is sometimes effected by trade wind swells but on the calmer days we can explore these mostly untouched dive sites. Schools of mutton snapper, Atlantic spadefish and permit hover 80 feet above the sea floor and blue runners make close passes, apparently attracted by the bubbles of the strange "Neoprene-clad creatures".

    kjhaskfhdklshfyufgshfjhf

Turneffe's Southern point offers a variety of popular dive sites featured in many of the Belize dive guides. The Elbow is probably the best know site here with the ocean current sweeping over the deep reef to attract schools of pelagic fish. As you travel up the Southwest or Southeast sides of the atoll, dive sites vary from patch reef nurseries with dramatic coral formations to steep drop-offs.

    Personalized Service
We specialize in providing personalized service for small dive groups and try to be as flexible as possible with our diving. New divers can gain experience with the individual attention they may require and experienced divers can enjoy the freedom of spectacular wall diving, drift diving and underwater photography opportunities.

On the dive boat, we provide towels, cold drinks and fresh fruit as well as a fresh water rinse tank for camera equipment. Unless you request otherwise, you do not have to handle your dive equipment during your stay. Our staff will change all tanks and rinse your dive gear daily before storing it.

    yhqtwftydgjdsgfjsdyfuigyrf

The Blue Hole and Lighthouse Reef
A hightlight of any dive vaction in Belize is a trip to the Blue Hole and Lighthouse Atoll. Our location offers excellent access to the Blue Hole, and, weather permitting, a weekly trip to the Blue Hole is a standard part of our Dive Program. This is a full day trip with the the initial dive at the Blue Hole generally followed by Half Moon Hall and the Aquarium. A mid-day stop at Half Moon Caye for a picnic lunch and a visit to the Red Footed Boobie Bird Sancturary is a hightlight.

    Dive Safety
Your dive safety is of the utmost importance to Turneffe Flats. For this reason, and to ensure that you see the best of the marine life, a qualified Divemaster and/or Instructor is in the water at all times. We use the buddy system, conduct safety stops on every dive and plan adequate surface intervals between dives. Our staff is First Aid & Oxygen First Aid trained and we are affiliated with Subaquatic Safety Services which operates the Hyperbaric Chamber in Belize.

    Nitrox
Nitrox is available as is Nitrox Certification.

    Jungle / Island Package

Experience one of Belize’s premier jungle resorts as well as Belize’s top island location. The combination of Chan Chich and Turneffe Flats offers the best of both sides of Belize. The all-inclusive package described below offers a variety of activities as outlined in our Eco-Adventure Package including world-class snorkeling, birding, dolphin watching, and adventuring on the Turneffe Atoll. In addition, you will enjoy archeological tours of Maya Tombs, canoeing down Laguna Verde, horseback rides through the jungle, and trail walks at Chan Chich.
    nmhsajkdhiauioduqwthfghdsfhg
Chan Chich is located on a 130,000 acre private nature reserve in Northwestern Belize at the heart of “La Selva Maya”. With an unparalleled abundance of wildlife, not to mention a good chance to see the elusive jaguar in its natural habitat, Chan Chich is an extraordinary destination for naturalists, birders, and for those seeking an authentic retreat to the jungle.

Transfers to/from Chan Chich are not included in the package rate.

    Chan Chich
Chan Chich Lodge is located on Gallon Jug Estate in north-western Belize. This lies within the largest contiguous forest north of the Amazon basin. Conservation efforts to sustain and preserve the tri-national Maya Forest ("La Selva Maya") are underway with collaborative efforts undertaken in Belize, Guatemala and Mexico. Gallon Jug Estate enjoys a fortunate location at the heart of La Selva Maya, buffered on all sides by forest and/or protected areas. Thanks to the efforts of owner, Barry Bowen, to control hunting and other illegal activities over the past 20+ years, wildlife has thrived.

The 12 thatched-roof cabanas surround two central buildings that contain the reception desk, restaurant, bar, gift shop and reading room. Each cabana, beautifully furnished with local exotic hardwoods, is fully screened with ceiling fans, private bath, hot & cold water, 24 hour electricity and a wrap-around verandah with hammocks. Standard cabanas have two queen beds. Deluxe cabanas (recently renovated) comprise one king bed with a spacious luxury bathroom, walk-in closet and mini-bar.

Due to Chan Chich's unique location on Gallon Jug Estate, they are blessed with an abundance of wildlife. Over 350 species of birds have been recorded at Chan Chich, making it one of the world's premier birding destinations - large birds, such as the Ocellated Turkey, Crested Guan and Great Curassow, hunted out in so many other places, are readily seen here as well as a myriad of other species. All five cat species - jaguar, puma, ocelot, margay and jaguarundi - are well represented with jaguars seen at the rate of about one per week, a record that is unmatched elsewhere. Tapir, both white-lipped and collared peccary, brocket and white-tailed deer can be found in great quantities as well as smaller species like tayra, fox, agoutis and kinkajou.
